Activation/Setup FAQs ///
Can I connect an inReach™ device that has been purchased overseas?
You may find an inReach™ device available from an overseas retailer. An inReach™ device from an overseas provider can be connected in New Zealand for a once-off fee of NZD$170. If you have any questions about purchasing an inReach™ device from an overseas retailer or to check if connecting your inReach™ will incur a connection charge, please call our Customer Care team on 0508 882 448.
How long does it take to activate my inReach™?
Activation is very quick. Simply enter your IMEI device identification number and authorization code followed by your personal contact information, message plan, emergency contacts, and billing information. Your inReach™ IMEI and Authorization Code numbers are on a sticker inside the inReach™ battery compartment. If you have batteries installed, you may need to remove them to see the codes. The activation process generally takes about 5 to 10 minutes. In instances where the final activation of the Iridium modem could take longer to process, we will inform you of that and an email will notify you when the system is ready for use.
How do I create pre-loaded messages?
You can easily set up and create pre-loaded messages on your inReach™ Explore account.
How do I set up MapShare?
In your inReach™ Explore account, choose the MapShare tab and set your MapShare preferences to enable the page, to allow visitors to send messages and view your location, and to give your page a title and a description. A password can also be created to restrict who has access to view the page. After saving the changes to MapShare, you can email a link to your friends and family along with an explanatory message. Note that you can also send a link to your MapShare from your Android or iOS device when you are on your trip, just in case you forgot to let someone know until you were already traveling.
Can users put privacy settings in place?
Users can enable a password for their MapShare page and share that password only with family and friends of their choosing.
How often do I need to download new maps for my Android or iOS device?
The easiest thing to do is download only the maps for the regions where you’ll be traveling. After doing so, you’ll need to download new maps for those regions only upon a new release of maps. Customers will be notified.
How can I activate my inReach™ device if I am in a place without Internet access?
Pivotel Customer Care 0508 882 448 will help you activate your device and enter your account information if you do not have access to the Internet.

Product FAQs ///
Does inReach™ use the same satellites for its GPS and communication capabilities?
No, the inReach™ GPS and Communications systems use different sets of satellites. The GPS component, which attaches your position coordinates to any messages you send and also enables remote tracking, relies on the Global Positioning System, inReach™ uses the Iridium satellite system to send messages.
How does inReach™ differ from other satellite communicators?
inReach™ is the first two-way satellite messaging device with delivery confirmation, interactive SOS, and complete pole-to-pole coverage available at a consumer-affordable price. There are consumer devices that offer only one-way communication and very expensive satellite systems that are capable of two-way communication.
Is inReach™ waterproof and dustproof?
The inReach™ meets the International Protection Rating of IP67, also referred to as Ingress Protection. The first number represents the level of solid particle protection; inReach’s value of 6 means that it is dust tight (“No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact”). The second number represents the level of liquid ingress protection; inReach’s value of 7 means that it will withstand immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes (“Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time”). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code
How long will the batteries last?
The inReach™ has been tested to last up to 125 hours on two lithium AA batteries, based on transmitting one tracking point every 10 minutes. Actual results will vary based on individual usage. The inReach™ also supports the use of alkaline and nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Using these batteries with the same 10-minute tracking interval delivers up to 72 hours with NiMH and up to 32 hours with alkaline.
How does inReach™ work with social media?
You can post messages to Twitter and update your status on Facebook using your inReach™ device paired with your smartphone from anywhere.
How do I get help?
In case of emergency, GEOS IERCC will liaise with the appropriate New Zealand search and rescue authorities or the appropriate local authorities if you are somewhere else in the world, as well as coordinate with any additional resources that may be required for your rescue. In a nonemergency situation, you can text your inReach™ help contacts and they can arrange appropriate assistance. Your GPS coordinates will be embedded in the message you send, so help will be able to find you.
Is there any place where inReach™ won’t work?
Because of Iridium’s whole earth coverage, any limiting factors would be solely due to terrain or other conditions that prevent line of sight to the Iridium satellites. For example, if you’re in a deep slot canyon or an unusually narrow mountain pass, you may not have the direct line of sight to a satellite that’s needed. The inReach™ has been tested successfully under heavy forest cover, even triple canopy, but it is possible that in some locations the canopy may be dense enough to block line of sight. In these or other instances where line of sight is unavailable, you will know your message has not reached the satellite because you will not receive a message confirmation and the signal LED will flash red. In these situations, you should move to a more favourable location and try again.
What is Iridium?
Iridium is the world’s only satellite network with pole-to-pole global coverage and two-way communication capabilities that other satellite systems can’t match.
If my inReach™ fails under warranty, who do I contact?
You can contact Pivotel Customer Care on 0508 882 448.

GEOS Search and Rescue ///
Your inReach™ SOS service is supported by the GEOS Alliance which provides emergency response co-ordination through the International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). Send an SOS message through inReach, and it goes directly to the IERCC.

The team at the IERCC is staffed and ready 24/7, 365 days per year, with SAR Mission Coordinators and Duty Officers. As soon as they receive your message, they’ll track your device and notify the appropriate New Zealand search and rescue authorities or the appropriate local authorities if you are somewhere else in the world — they’ll also stay connected to provide updates on your location or to communicate with you. As soon as you activate your inReach, you have full, free access to the IERCC through GEOS SOS monitoring and emergency dispatch. How’s that for comforting?
